Welcome to another Motivation Monday! When it comes to learning Japanese (or any language), it’s easy to focus on the finish line: mastering kanji, fluently holding conversations, or acing the JLPT. But what if I told you the real magic happens in the process?

The Journey, Not Just the Destination

One thing I’ve learned while relearning Japanese is that finding joy in the day-to-day process makes the experience far more rewarding. Whether it’s laughing at my own mistakes, discovering a fun Japanese show, or trying to pronounce new words, every little moment is part of the adventure.

Celebrate the Little Things

  • That “Aha!” Moment: When you suddenly understand how a grammar rule works.
  • Discovering a New Song: Listening to a Japanese song and picking out words you recognise.
  • Tiny Wins Add Up: Using a new phrase in conversation, even if it’s just a simple “ありがとう!”

How I Find Joy in the Process

Here are some ways I make learning Japanese enjoyable and engaging:

1. Organising Notes and Lessons
As a tech enthusiast and web developer, I find joy in organising my notes. After each lesson, I like to retype what I’ve learned, refine my notes, and structure them neatly. It helps reinforce the material and gives me a sense of accomplishment.

2. Practical Language Use
I love food and coffee culture, so I focus on learning phrases I can use when ordering or making adjustments—like asking for less sugar or adding extra milk. These small, real-life applications keep the language practical and rewarding.

3. Giggling at Mistakes
Mistakes happen, and I’ve learned to giggle at myself when they do. Like the time I mispronounced a word and got a funny look—it’s all part of the learning process and makes for great stories later.

4. Exploring Japanese Media
Japanese media is a treasure trove of learning opportunities. I enjoy watching dramas or YouTube videos with subtitles, where I can catch everyday phrases and hear how the language is naturally spoken.

Staying Motivated Through Joy

When learning feels fun, it’s easier to stay motivated, even on tough days. I’ve learned to appreciate the small joys along the way—whether it’s understanding a new sentence structure or bonding with friends over shared struggles in class.

Your Motivation for This Week

Here’s how you can bring joy into your learning this week:

  • Find What Excites You: Is it music? Food? Travel? Tie your learning to that.
  • Celebrate Your Wins: No matter how small, every bit of progress counts.
  • Be Kind to Yourself: Remember, it’s okay to make mistakes—they’re proof you’re trying.
