Welcome to Fun Friday, where we explore lighthearted and enjoyable ways to learn Japanese! For our first post, let’s keep it simple and focus on something every beginner can use: basic Japanese greetings.

Why Greetings Are Fun to Learn

Greetings are more than just polite expressions—they’re a way to connect with people and show respect for the culture. Plus, they’re easy to practice and perfect as a beginner.

Everyday Japanese Greetings

  1. こんにちは (Konnichiwa) – Hello / Good afternoon
  • A simple and friendly greeting for any time of the day.
  1. おはようございます (Ohayō gozaimasu) – Good morning
  • Use this before 10 a.m. to greet someone politely.
  1. こんばんは (Konbanwa) – Good evening
  • A great way to say hello in the evening or when meeting someone at night.
  1. ありがとう (Arigatou) – Thank you
  • Expressing gratitude is always appreciated.
  1. さようなら (Sayōnara) – Goodbye
  • Say this when parting ways for the day.

Fun Ways to Practice

  • Greet Yourself in the Mirror: Start your day by saying “おはようございます” to yourself—it’s a fun way to boost your confidence.
  • Practice with Apps: Use language-learning apps that offer speaking exercises to practice greetings and get pronunciation feedback.
  • Try Virtual Connections: Join online language exchange communities or forums to practice greetings with others interested in Japanese.

My Experience

Practicing greetings during my travels in Japan was one of the best ways to connect with people. A simple “こんにちは” always brought a smile, and it felt rewarding to see how much it was appreciated.
