Welcome to Monday Motivation. Learning Japanese can feel overwhelming at times. With so much to tackle—writing systems, vocabulary, grammar, and listening—it’s easy to wonder if you’re making any real progress. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned on my journey, it’s this: small, consistent steps make all the difference.

The Power of Small Wins

When I started relearning Japanese, I focused on just a few characters at a time—one day hiragana, the next katakana. Breaking it into manageable chunks helped me stay motivated and build momentum. Each time I remembered a new character or phrase, it felt like a small victory, and those victories added up.

Staying Consistent

Here are a few strategies that kept me moving forward, even when I was busy or felt stuck:

  1. Set Realistic Goals
  • Instead of aiming to master an entire grammar chapter in a day, I focus on one section or concept.
  • Example: “Today, I’ll learn 3 new verbs.”
  1. Daily Practice
  • Even just 10–15 minutes a day makes a huge difference over time. Consistency beats intensity every time.
  1. Celebrate Progress
  • Acknowledge small wins! Finished memorising the katakana chart? Reward yourself with a favourite Japanese snack or a quick break to relax.

Staying Motivated on Tough Days

It’s not always easy to stay motivated, especially when progress feels slow. On those days, I remind myself why I’m learning Japanese. For me, it’s about reconnecting with a language I once loved and preparing for future travels to Japan.

Thinking about the moments when I’ve successfully used Japanese while traveling—ordering food, asking for directions, or simply saying “ありがとう”—helps keep me going.

Your Motivation for This Week

If you’re learning Japanese (or any skill), here’s my advice for this week:

  • Start small: Pick one thing you want to focus on, like learning 5 new words or practicing a single phrase.
  • Be patient: Progress may be slow, but it’s still progress.
  • Remember your why: Keep your goals in mind to fuel your motivation.
